About
The Office of Missing Persons in Bougainville (OMPB) is the official body of the Autonomous Government of Bougainville, mandated to set up a humanitarian mechanism to clarify the fate and whereabouts of persons who went missing during the Bougainville Conflict (1988-1998) and to provide psychosocial support to the families of the missing.
Missing Persons
- The issue of missing persons is not an issue of the past; it continues to impact families, communities, and society, and has a ripple effect across generations. Addressing the issue helps build resilient communities, achieve social cohesion, prevent further violence, and seeks to bring about solace (bel isi) to affected individuals.
- The right of families to know the fate and whereabouts of their loved ones is first and foremost humanitarian. All who have information are supported and protected to come forward on a confidential basis to strengthen this humanitarian endeavor.

Information Management
- The OMPB cannot pay for information and cannot provide compensations. Information is provided to the OMPB on a voluntary basis, all confidential data is protected and used only for establishing the fate and whereabouts of the missing persons.
- The OMPB will not be involved in any criminal prosecutions and cannot share any information related to accountability.
Families
The families of missing persons are central to the OMPB`s operations. Family members are invited to participate in the Accompaniment Programme that is especially designed to support them.
